"You gotta have a goal. Do you have a Goal?" Kit Delucca, Prostitute/Future Life Coach
My favorite scene in Pretty Woman is at the end when Kit Delucca interviews Rachel, a potential new roommate. Every time I think about goals, this quote pops in my head.
“You gotta have a goal. Do you have a goal?”
I grew up thinking that Pretty Woman was about two people from different worlds who find each other by chance, fall in love and ride off into the sunset because they’ve “rescued” each other.
My 46 year old brain disagrees. It thinks the movie is about figuring out what you want.
Edward wants a companion without strings. Vivian sees an opportunity to make some serious cash. Easy right? If that was the movie…..boring!
The more time they spend together, they begin to question their original wants.
Edward is actually living and not just transacting. Vivian starts to see her life and the relationship with Edward in a new light, one with possibility.
But yet, when Vivian musters up the courage to tell him what she wants, he tells her it’s impossible.
Vivian stands her ground and let’s Edward go.
She’s crystal clear on what she wants. Edward needs time to see the relationship is possible and decide if that’s what he wants.
Cut to the scene with the flowers and the fire escape and voila! They rescue each other.
Movies make it look easy to figure out what we want from life in less than two hours.
Some people know exactly what they want.
Many of us don’t because we’ve placed limits on what’s possible because we don’t know HOW to make it happen.
But when asked, 100% of people I coach know what they want.
They think the how is the roadblock.
Here’s the BIGGEST SECRET…..how is not the problem, your thoughts are the problem.
No one knows HOW they are going to achieve their goals and dreams until they actually make them happen.
There are two crucial steps BEFORE “the how”.
The first step is to ask and answer, “What do I want?”.
Be prepared for your brain to give you all of the reasons why you shouldn’t even try.
It’s a bunch of thoughts that sound like, “the problem with that is….., this won’t work because…..”.
The second step is to be aware of thoughts that move you forward and thoughts that keep you stuck.
From that point, you're either taking steps toward achieving your goals or not.
When you understand what really stands in your way and you have a system move through the obstacles, that thing you want, becomes a reality.
Allow yourself to want. Learn to manage your brain. Achieve your goals.
“Welcome to Hollywood! What's your dream? Everybody comes here; this is Hollywood, land of dreams. Some dreams come true, some don’t, but keep on dreamin’—this is Hollywood. Always time to dream, so keep on dreamin’.”
