I Don't Feel Like it/Part 2

Sometimes one blog post about a subject isn’t enough.

I wrote the Friday Funnies version of “I Don’t Feel Like it”.

Today, it’s all about a bonus lesson on how to train your brain when you don’t feel like it.

You see, your brain likes three things:  it wants to seek pleasure, avoid pain and be efficient.  This is called the Motivational Triad also known as the “pleasure trap”.

When you have the thought, “I don’t feel like it” (or some other version...I don’t want to, I don’t have time, etc.), your brain thinks what you’re doing is going to take effort and be painful.  So it reminds you how EASY it is to sit on the couch and watch netflix.

And when pleasure is readily available everywhere we look, our brain is doing a happy dance because it thinks it’s doing you a HUGE favor.  It’s keeping you safe from being eaten by a big scary lion.

The problem is our brains are operating under caveman conditions, but the world has evolved and our brains need to catch up.

Our brains need some training.

They need to be told, on purpose, what to think.

Because those thoughts create our feelings.

And those feelings drive our behavior.

So imagine you’ve got a workout on your schedule today.  You wake up and you start thinking I don’t feel like it.  You feel unmotivated, maybe apathetic.  You start talking yourself out of going to the workout.  You find all of the reasons to say fuck it.  And you don’t go.

"I don’t feel like it" just gave you the opportunity to avoid the perceived pain of the workout, opens up space for you to stay in bed where it’s cozy and comfortable and you can save your energy for the big, scary lions who might eat you today.

But that’s not what you REALLY WANT.

You want to go workout.  You want to feel strong.  You want the health benefits.

So how do you get your brain on board?

You tell it what to think about that workout even when it tells you all of the reasons not to go.

Here’s what it might sound like:

Brain:  "It’s so nice laying in bed, isn’t it.  It’s going to be a hot one out there.  You have so much other stuff to do today.  Work is going to be crazy and if you’re tired from your workout, well, you know how that goes.  Take it easy.  Let’s see what’s happening on Facebook."

But then you have that moment.  You’re on to your brain.  You’ve seen this movie before and you’re ready for it.

Hey brain.  Thanks, but no thanks.  I’m showing up for my workout today no matter what.

When I say that, I feel committed.  I’m getting out of bed, getting ready and getting out the door.  On the way to the gym, I’m listening to my favorite songs.  I’m walking in with a smile and I get after it.

The result?  I’ve done the workout, reap the benefits and didn’t get eaten by a lion.

You can apply this brain training to any goal or result you want.

Know it’s a process.  Know it takes work.  Know you can 100% do it.

And know it's perfectly ok to ask for help to get there.  I did and still do.

We aren’t meant to know it all.  We’re meant to grow and learn alongside each other.
